John Perry Barlow is the author of the Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace and was the first person to apply the term “cyberspace” to the concept that today is recognised worldwide. He is the cofounder of The Electronic Frontier Foundation, whose work consists in defending and promoting freedom of speech and expression on the net. He is a Fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics and the Harvard Law School and the co-author of the lyrics of the famous American rock group The Grateful Dead.

Roja Directa

Roja Directa is the largest index of Internet sports broadcasts available on the net with links to a range of different sports events (mainly football). In 2009 it won a court case in Spain in which Audiovisual Sport claimed that the activities of Rojadirecta constituted a criminal offense. In February this year the US government blocked the domains rojadirecta.org and rojadirecta.com. Today the company Port 80Projects, owner of the website, has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government for blocking their domain. The case is pending trail.

Hernán Casciari was born in Mercedes, Buenos Aires, in 1971. He is a writer and journalist. Darfurnica de Nadia Plesner

Danish artist Nadia Plesner painted Darfurnica with the intention of denouncing the way in which the Western media was reporting the genocide occurring in Darfur. The mural, as the name implies, in the style of Guernica, depicted rich and famous people such as Paris Hilton or Victoria Beckham along side victims of genocide. Dangling form one of these victims’ arms was a Louis Vuitton bag. From there a legal battle ensued over the rights of the trademark design by Louis Vuitton. The brand demanded that Nadia pay 5000€ for each day that her work was exhibited in public claiming that her work represented a “threatening infringement of intellectual property.” The case led Nadia to the Hague, where in June of this year, where after a long and costly legal battle, The European Court of Justice, rejected Vuitton’s augments, annulled the accumulated fine of 485000€ and ordered the brand to pay 15000€ for Nadia’s legal costs

Roser Capdevila

¡Copiad malditos!

Copiad Malditos is a documentary project by de Stephane Grueso and his production company elegantmob films in collaboration with Televisión Española. The documentary focuses on the current debate surrounding copyright and intellectual property rights and does so using the documentary itself as a study case. It chronicles the difficulties that the team encountered while trying to produce a work for a public TV channel under a Creative Commons BY/NC 3.0. license. Finally the Project was aired in April of this year and was the first televisions program in Spain to be coproduced by TV station using a CC license.

Seville folk group Las Buenas Noches released their first album in 2008 entitled Aventuras Domesticas, through a Creative Commons license and distributed it for free on the Internet. This facilitated their expansion and they have since participated in numerous festivals. On their innovative and interactive website they offer free downloads of their new album Un Mal Día lo Tiene Cual Quier. Aaron Swartz

Aaron Swartz is the founder and director of Demand Progress, a non-profit political activist group with almost half a million members. He is the author of numerous article, particularly in relation to the corrupting influence that Money has on public institutions such as the media, politics or NGO’s. On Tuesday the 19th of July he was arrested on charges of information technology crimes, for having obtained illegally millions of academic documents from JSTOR via the net at MIT. He is accused of using a script to down load the documents and according to the charges of sharing those documents with other download sites although no evidence of this charge has been found to date.

Arròs Movie

Arros Movie is a film of oral tradition made from its very begging’s ​​by all the participants involved in the life of a film. It is an American-style road movie but with a Mediterranean flavor. From the day the project began, the idea has been for the actors, producers and spectators to be involved together in the project. The film in an idea by the group Compartir Dona Gustet and is under a free license system and financed via crowd funding.

Macarena: Versiones Domésticas desde el Procomún(With Tarántula, Manos de Topo, Tu Madre y Fluzo juntos en directo)

The International Festival ZEMOS98 together with “Produciones Doradas” have joined forces with groups from past editions of the festival to reedit this famous song. The groups: Pony Bravo, Tarantula + Your Mother, Manos de Topo, Fluzo, Mursego or Espaldamaceta have all contributed their own personal take on the Macarena along with an interpretation by the children”s choir “The neighborhood Kids”, of the “original song” “Trabajando en las minas del pan duro”. This original version was recovered orally by Peter G.Romero, and is without any doubt were “Los del Rio” copied la Macarena.

“Macarena: Versiones Domésticas desde el Procomún” is an album composed of seven tracks in which the participating groups incorporate their particular version of the famous song “Macarena” by Los del Rio to “denounce the indiscriminate use of public assets in the field of trade. “A song which has sold millions of copies worldwide and has led to various lawsuits relating to copyright despite being based on a folk song inspired by military marches in the public domain. Manuel Soler and Jesus Bola (the true producers of the song) have never received royalties for the work.

Palmer Eldritch (as Phillip K Dick fans will know, not his real name) has created an entertaining and illustrative video called SindePong basing on this legendary video game. SindePong demonstrates very graphically how boring and unproductive life can become when intellectual property right are promoted and imposed and as a result impede the free flow of information on the net.

Alex de la Iglesia

Film maker form Bilbao, Alex de Iglesia started his career as an illustrator and ended up becoming one of the most renowned Spanish directors of resent times.
